Urban Garden/Urban Roots Job Description

PS 84 The Lillian Weber School of the Arts
PS 84 proudly uses its rooftop garden as an outdoor classroom to improve students’ interest in school and healthy foods.

We are looking for a part time Elementary Urban Garden Teacher to lead lessons to improve academic engagement, promote understanding and awareness of environmental science, and instill in our students a love and an appreciation for agriculture!

Primary Responsibilities
• Provide garden education for elementary students that builds an improved sense of academic engagement, understanding of agriculture, and an awareness for healthy eating of fruits and vegetables
o Lead/teach lessons in the classroom and in the Urban Teaching Garden in accordance with provided curriculum
o Develop lessons in consultation with PS 84 teachers to improve existing curriculum
o Maintain accurate records of education program on students

Secondary and Related Responsibilities:
• Identify problems or areas for improvement, make suggestions and design solutions to lessons, teaching spaces, and teaching techniques implemented in our Urban Teaching Garden Program
• Maintain teaching supplies and teaching spaces
• Maintain aspects of social media to provide a forum for participants to learn more about Urban Roots programming
• Positive attitude and passion for teaching students in the Urban Teaching Garden Program
• Provide a fun and safe learning environment for all
• Collect and report program statistics
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• NYS Teaching Certification

Gardening Experience

Basic word processing and data management skills
• Ability to effectively lead workshops for both small and large groups of students
• Ability to successfully use education standards such as Common Core standards for reading and math and Next Generation Science Standards for lesson plan development
