Food Educator to Work with Elementary School Age Children in New York City

Spoons Across America,® <http://www.spoonsacrossamerica.org&gt; the recipe for healthier children, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating children, teachers, and families about the benefits of healthy eating. We work to influence the eating habits of children through hands-on education that celebrates the connection to local farmers and the important tradition of sharing meals around the family table.
We are currently seeking an organized, engaging, and self- motivated team player to join our team as a Food Educator. Primary duties include working directly with children ages 6-10 in schools and community centers to implement our food and nutrition literacy based programs. Additional office responsibilities focusing on planning and implementation of programs are also included.
Responsibilities:
Plan for and lead hands-on lessons and activities around taste exploration, healthy cooking, and nutrition to elementary aged children in schools and community centers.

Work with children to make discoveries and facilitate discussion and interaction

Support children with kitchen skills and safety in food preparation

Work with parents/families during family engagement sessions

Set up and clean up all materials.

Communicate and work with volunteers as required

Shop/purchase fresh food for classroom lessons (for reimbursement) as needed.

Prepare program materials for distribution to program sites as needed.

Maintain regular communication with Director of Programs regarding program implementation, outcomes, and volunteers
Attend regular staff meetings, trainings and workshops as needed

Participate in ongoing evaluation of programming

Work with social media and communications coordinator to promote program and outcomes.

Complete other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Demonstrate genuine passion and enthusiasm for the mission of Spoons Across America.

Possess a love for working with children, with at least 1-2 years of demonstrated teaching experience.

Superb communication and classroom management skills.

Highly organized, responsible, dependable, flexible, patient and detail-oriented.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work well with staff, teachers, interns, and volunteers to promote the mission of Spoons Across America

Dynamic personality with good sense of humor and appreciation for education and healthy, local food.

Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and Google Calendar/Docs

Able to lift 25 lbs.

Time Commitment and Location:

Job Title: Culinary Program Coordinator Bilingual English/Spanish

Status: Part- Time
Hours: 25 hour week, Mon to Fri, 9 am to 2 pm.
Reports to: Chef

West Side Campaign Against Hunger, an innovative emergency food pantry and
social service counseling center, seeks a dynamic assistant to our chef who
leads a Chef Training Program and the event and daily feeding of our Staff and
Pantry Clients. The Culinary Program Coordinator will assist the Chef with
both administrative and culinary needs.

The WSCAH chef Training program is a 12-week program focused on helping our
clients transition to work in the food preparation industry. Students learn
the basics of preparation of healthy and nutritious food, including proper
cooking technique; efficient knife skills and cooking methods; nutrition,
including portion size and basic nutritive requirements; sanitation and safe
food handling. Students also learn about mandated New York City Health
Department certifications. Under the direction of the chef, trainees prepare a
daily lunch and cater agency special events.

Job Responsibilities:
Chef Training Program: Support instruction for the West Side Campaign Against
Hunger Customer Chef Training Program on daily basis
Administration: Support Chef Program through data inputting for purchasing,
volunteerism, culinary program, nutrition and student/events outreach.
Supervision: On daily basis supervise any volunteers, interns, and students
working with WSCAH food programs.
Nutrition: Provide daily program of nutrition education ( demo’s; tastings)
for food pantry customers and volunteers and lunch meal utilizing food
available in the pantry.
Special Events: Plan, organize and execute the catering of both large scale
WSCAH fundraising events and small scale program and agency functions.
Team Member:
• Work in cooperation with agency staff on fund raising events,
nutrition education of pantry customers
• Develop partnerships for the placement of chef trainees in further
training, experience or employment.
• Advise on standard operating procedures for food safety and
sanitation, and purchase of food and equipment.
Qualifications:
• Cooking, Teaching, and Catering experience essential
• Basis competency with computers (Microsoft office suite) and other
office technology
• Degree in Culinary Arts, Hospitality, Nutrition or similar field
• Bi-lingual, English/Spanish, essential
• Experience desired with back to work programs
• Team Player

FARMroots’ Farm Beginnings Course Facilitator

FARMroots is Greenmarket’s technical assistance program, and provides both
aspiring and established Greenmarket farmers with business technical
assistance and training designed to ensure the long-term viability of
participating farms and farmland. Technical assistance is provided through
both in-house services and through the engagement of cost-shared consultants.
Reporting to the FARMroots’ Beginning Farmer Program Manager, the Farm
Beginnings Facilitator will be responsible for facilitating the 8-10 week NYC
Farm Beginnings Whole Farm Planning Course, which runs on weeknights in the
fall from 6-9pm. The position requires an understanding of whole farm planning
and business development resources available to farmers. Strong interpersonal
skills and experience in beginning farmer education are preferred.

Farm Beginnings Course Facilitator Responsibilities Include
• Using the Farm Beginnings Whole Farm Planning curriculum, deliver 8-
10, three-hour business training courses (in collaboration with farmer and
other practitioner guest speakers) for a diverse audience of beginning
farmers. Course content includes, goal setting, enterprise selection,
financial planning, marketing, access to land, access to capital, and legal.
• Coordinate the participation of weekly guest speakers, including
farmers, farm service providers, and other experts
• Help with weekly curriculum decisions and assist in the development of
training and educational materials for beginning and established farmers from
diverse educational and experiential backgrounds, including Latino farmworkers

Job Qualifications
• 2+ years of practical experience working in or with commercial
agricultural businesses
• Knowledge of beginning farm business planning process, including goal
setting, financial planning, marketing, and risk management planning
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Experience providing adult education
• Commitment to food and racial justice
• Knowledge of or exposure to Holistic Management principles is
preferred but not required

Compensation: $20/hour. This position is 5-10 hours per week from mid-
September to January and includes statutory benefits.

that can advance equitable and intersectoral solutions to urban food problems
and is located at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy.
Candidates should have a graduate degree in public health, food policy or a
related field and at least three years of experience managing community based
research or evaluation on food or public health interventions in low-income,
Black or Latino communities. Strong writing and project management skills and
training and experience in the collection and analysis of survey and other
forms of data are required. The position is open immediately and can be full

The CUNY Urban Food Policy Institute seeks a postdoctoral fellow to coordinate
and manage several evaluation studies of community food programs in New York
City. The Institute develops evidence that can advance equitable and
intersectoral solutions to urban food problems and is located at the CUNY
Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy. Candidates should have
recently completed a doctorate (Ph.D., D.Ph., Ed.D.) in public health,
planning, geography, education, or a related field and be interested in
evaluation research. The ideal post-doc will have experience carrying out
community based evaluation research on food or public health
interventions in low-income, Black or Latino communities. Strong writing and
project management skills are required in addition to training and expertise
in qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis are required.
This is a non-teaching postdoctoral position but opportunities for teaching
part-time within CUNY may be possible depending on academic and teaching
experience. The position is open immediately and is full-time, though options
for a part-time position will be considered. Salary or stipend commensurate
with experience. Fellow will be mentored by Institute directors and faculty
fellows in program and policy evaluation and assisted in publishing peer-
