Children’s Aid (CA) helps children in poverty to succeed and thrive. We do
this by providing comprehensive supports to children and their families in
targeted, high-needs New York City neighborhoods.  In 2003, CA launched a
number of programs aimed at preventing and slowing the rates of childhood
obesity in the communities we serve. The programs come together under the
umbrella of Go!Healthy, a comprehensive obesity prevention and health
promotion initiative that engages children from birth through adolescence, as

Go!Healthy’s  Go!Chefs program is a nutrition education and cooking curriculum
for elementary, middle and high school youth. Since 2005, Go!Chefs has
introduced youth to the pleasures of growing, preparing and enjoying “real
food” that is both nutritious and delicious – an essential step toward health
and well-being.
The Children’s Aid Society’s Go!Healthy program is seeking dynamic instructors
to lead its new Go!Chefs Teen Apprenticeship Program during the 2017-2018
school year. The chef instructor will work during the 1-4 days per week.  The
instructor must also be available for a training the last week of September
and to conduct classes throughout the duration of the school year.
Responsibilities include:
• Effectively implementing the Go!Chefs Teen Apprenticeship curriculum
which includes hands-on cooking instruction, nutrition education, activities,
and reflection
• Managing and ensuring safety for approx. 10 high school students
• Maintaining classroom equipment and procurement of food needed for
lessons
• Communicating with site directors and program manager about program
progress and needs
• Facilitating classroom discussion around nutrition, culinary skills
and food justice
• Reporting to the Go!Chefs and Garden Program Manager and Director of
Food and Nutrition Programs
• Coaching students through final mock restaurant project
Candidate must be:
• A dynamic teacher with significant teaching experience and culinary
skills
• Culinary degree or professional cooking experience preferred
• Strong understanding of nutrition
• Personally committed to wellness and healthy eating
• Highly organized and able to work independently
• Energetic, self-motivated and responsible
• A good communicator

Student Mentor Internship
Teens for Food Justice is a not-for-profit organization that is galvanizing a
youth-led food justice movement.  We train youth in 21st century hydroponic
urban agricultural farming techniques, entrepreneurship, and health/nutrition
education and advocacy, empowering them as change agents who can lead
themselves and their own food insecure communities towards healthier futures.
These youth-run farms serve as local sources for fresh food and centers for
nutrition and health education in their schools and communities.
TFFJ currently runs high capacity indoor hydroponic farms in Title 1 schools
throughout New York City. These student-built and -run farms will grow 20,000
to 25,000 lbs. of produce annually, enough to serve the students in the
cafeteria daily and provide produce for affordable prices to community
residents at school-based and student-run farm markets, and through an
emergency food assistance programs.  In collaboration with the school’s’
administration and faculty, TFFJ has designed programming that will train
students in the science and engineering of cutting-edge hydroponic technology,
providing enriched STEM education and urban agricultural job training, as they
build, manage, harvest, and distribute the produce from the farm. Likewise,
students will build leadership, communications, and critical thinking skills
while  become food justice advocates within their community.
Position Overview:
TFFJ mentors work collaboratively with their fellow mentors, the TFFJ staff
and program lead, and faculty and administration of either DeWitt-Clinton High
School Campus, Urban Assembly Unison School, or Brownsville Collaborative
Middle School to facilitate a safe, empowering learning environment for the
students (grades 6th – 8th or 9 -12th) in the Teens for Food Justice farm. As
a mentor, you will provide guidance for students participating in the
Hydroponics and Social Entrepreneurship Apprenticeship.  The apprenticeship
curriculum covers themes related to environmental sustainability and water
resource management, engineering solutions to food insecurity, and the
potential for renewable fuels to become sustainable solutions to these issues.
As a mentor, your presence in the classroom is that of a positive adult role
model and activity leaders.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the TFFJ Mentor are:
Consistent, regular attendance at all after-school hours and Saturday events.
If you are unable to make it to a day of programming or a Saturday program,
please notify Taylor Pate (TFFJ Advocacy and Community Engagement Coordinator)
as soon as possible, preferably at least a week in advance. In the event of
illness, you must notify by phone as early as possible.
Prompt arrival 30 minutes before start of after-school programming (3:00 p.m)
to prepare for each day’s activities in advance.  All mentors are responsible
for staying until 5:30 for clean-up and debrief.
Always comport yourself as a role model to our student team. Respect all rules
of DeWitt Clinton High School Campus, Urban Assembly Unison School, or
Brownsville Collaborative Middle School (whichever you are assigned to) and
Teens for Justice, including our no cell phone policy.
Facilitate small-group activities outlined in lesson plan in a way that
encourages all students to participate, share their insights, and ensure that
all students have understood the purpose of the activity
Review curriculum prior to Apprenticeship and report back to Advocacy and
Community Engagement coordinator or Program Manager with any questions.
You are responsible for the students in your group or team during program
hours and must ensure you know their whereabouts at all times.
Mentors are required to undergo a background check, which includes a TB test
and physical, background paperwork, and fingerprints; expenses of this process
are not a mentor responsibility.
This is a volunteer position, but an unlimited monthly metrocard is provided
as a stipend.

Youth Market Part-Time Manager
Part-time Youthmarket Manager Position:  GrowNYC seeks highly organized, self-
motivated, outgoing early-riser to manage one youth-run farm stand in NYC on
Saturdays. Reporting to the Youthmarket Program Coordinator, part-time
Youthmarket Manager will set up and take down farm stands, oversee
merchandising and sales, supervise youth and conduct at-market lessons and
activities about the produce sold at the market, healthy eating, and small
business skills. Part-time Youthmarket Manager will also have scheduled 2-3
office hours to deposit market income and submit all financial paperwork for
their markets to the Program Coordinator. Part-time Youthmarket Manager will
function as Youthmarket’s field representative to program participants and
partner organizations and must have the ability to work well with a wide
variety of individuals, including youth and seniors. Applicants should have an
interest in food, knowledge about food systems, and a desire to increase food-
access in NYC’s low-income communities. The position requires excellent time
management and organizational skills, excellent communications skills (both
written and oral), a professional demeanor, high physical energy (must be able
to lift 50 lbs), familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Documents, and
experience working with young people and/or seniors. Applicants must be
reliable, responsible, and capable of working independently, with minimal
supervision. Part-time Youthmarket Manager will be required to manage a
Youthmarket on Saturdays and spend additional few hours in the office on
Tuesdays to submit all market paperwork. Speakers of Spanish, Chinese, Russian
and other languages are strongly encouraged to apply.
Physical Requirements:  Part-time Youthmarket Manager position requires
working outdoors in all weather conditions, standing and walking for extended
periods, carrying heavy and bulky items on a daily basis (must be able to lift
50 lbs), and working early morning hours.
Youthmarket Manager Responsibilities:
Below is a list of some, but not all, of part-time Youthmarket Manager duties:
• Maintain equipment and materials necessary to daily market operations,
including price signs, tents, tables, and scales;
• Supervise daily market operations—including set up, merchandising,
sales, and breakdown—according to schedule;
• Fill out daily paperwork to be submitted to the Program Coordinator;
• Maintain strict oversight of market revenue, and submitting it to the
Program Coordinator;
• Help facilitate a training session for youth staff at the outset of
the market season;
• Supervise youth at market, guiding them as they receive on-the-job
training in customer service and merchandising and educating them about market
product and the program’s mission;
• Perform outreach in the local community to promote markets, and the
use of EBT/Food Stamps at the market;
• Oversee and guide volunteers at market;
• Function as GrowNYC Youthmarket’s representative to partner
organizations and their staff;
• Be knowledgeable about origins and uses of products at market; be able
to communicate that knowledge to youth and customers.
Agriculture is seasonal in New York, as is the job of the Youthmarket Manager.
The position will start with training days in late August, with part-time/
seasonal work beginning in early September and ending in early December. The
part-time Youthmarket Manager will work 10-15 hours per week. The position
pays $16/hour and includes only statutory benefits. Submit cover letter,
